(YOW) Ottawa - Home is Where the Heart is
I’m not going to lie — I don’t think it’s the most exciting city in the world. It does however, hold a special place in my heart. If you ever catch yourself in Canada’s capital, these are the things you must do!
If you have…
24 – 48hrs:
• Rideau Canal
• Peace Tower (must go up!!)
• Dinner at Byward Market
• Cocktails at The Andaz — It’s also a hotel so you can stay here or at the Westin, and you’ll be in the heart of everything.
• Winterlude (…in the winter)
• Lansdowne Park // Tulip Fest (Spring/summer only)
• Canoe/Kayak @ Dows Lake Pavilion (Spring – Fall)
• Canada Aviation & Space Museum or Nature Nocturne Museum (Spring/summer only)
Try everything on the lists, but also venture out. Ottawa is about 2hrs from Montreal, 5hrs from Toronto, 6hrs from Niagara Falls and 2 hours from Thousand Islands. Remember — Canadians are friendly; don’t be afraid to venture out!
This is literally my favourite thing about Ottawa. Maybe I’m easily amused, maybe I’m being nostalgic, whatever it is, I highly recommend it. GO NOW. Just kidding. Wait till Winter! During the brutal winters, the canal completely freezes; therefore, allowing you to ice skate over it. I only have the fondest childhood memories here. My grandfather always bought me a cup of hot chocolate after skating practice, but something about being outside and eating a “Beavertail” (a doughy, sweet treat in the shape of a beavertail) post-skating made it super special for me.
If you happen to be in Ottawa during the spring or summer, you can catch a boat tour on the canal. It’s just as majestic, but I still think nothing beats skating outside while being surrounded by beautiful architecture.
Catch dinner at Byward and drinks at The Andaz. The Andaz is my favourite cocktail bar simply for its location and view. I’m a sucker for pretty much anything with a nice view though. Whatever you do, do NOT forget to try Poutine (Fries, gravy, cheese, optional meat) — a savoury Canadian delicacy!
